Lamin8 Scotland Looks to Software for Streamlined Growth

“There’s no doubt that technology is revolutionising traditional workflows in the cabinet manufacturing industry”, said Scott Purdom, Owner at Lamin8 Scotland and Robert Sinclair Interiors.

“We knew that we had to start thinking like a technology company to stay ahead of our competition and grow our two businesses. Choosing the right technology that would provide the right capabilities to drive our diverse product lines, however, was key to achieving our goals," said Scott.

Lamin8 Scotland was formed in 2002, to fill a gap in the market for niche residential and commercial products. Like any wood product manufacturer just starting out, the Angus-based firm invested in people, software and machinery to help them deliver products to their clients. As the years went by, and the company grew, they began to realise their choice in CAD/CAM software was limiting their growth. And so, the search for new software began.

In 2009, Scott and his team selected new software from Microvellum, an AutoCAD®-based design-for-manufacturing solution, with the goal to unify the design, engineering and manufacturing workflows between Lamin8 and their newly formed Robert Sinclair Interiors brand of residential cabinetry and furniture.

“The nature of our business is very client-centric”, said Scott.

“When our clients ask for unique, bespoke designs and fabrication, we aim to deliver and exceed their expectations. Having software that limited our vision and our capacity to live up to our values was frustrating. We knew we had to make a change in our technology if we wanted to continue to grow."

“Microvellum has changed the way we do business. Its staff in the UK have not only assisted me to get the best out of my software and machinery, but the staff's extensive knowledge of manufacturing has helped us to streamline our operations, enabling us to be more professional and efficient. We’re currently working on integrating the latest cabinet library available that is sure to give us even greater control and flexibility for bespoke cabinet designs."

With their continued investment in education, technology, and machinery, Scott has ensured his team has the most up-to-date, leading-edge production facilities to service the diverse demands of their clients.

Recently, in partnership with Microvellum and SCM Group, Scott’s team completed the integration of their new Morbidelli CX 220 - the first of its kind sold within the UK. “It was quite impressive to see how everyone involved with installing my new SCM machine worked together to ensure that the connection worked perfectly and was integrated with the rest of my machinery and workflows."

Lamin8’s production facility is also equipped with an SCM Record 132 router, Homag KDF 440 airTec edgebander, Biesse SKILL machining centre, and a Scheer PA4500 beam saw – all powered by Microvellum’s CNC technology.

“At a time when the world and supply of materials has gone crazy, it’s nice to know we are working with a company that cares about what we do and has our back!  We believe that all of this has enabled us to stay a cut above the rest when it comes to residential and commercial joinery in Scotland."
