Since 1988, Spectrum Woodworking has been providing
high quality yet competitive, commercial cabinetry and
millwork to the Oregon/Washington area. The company
attributes its success to its expert craftsmanship along
with the implementation of the latest technological
advancements to its manufacturing process. The company
credits software from Microvellum for helping to
streamline its production capabilities.
Thirty-two Spectrum Woodworking employees manufacture
mostly commercial fixtures for hospitals, offices and
lobbies along with paneling jobs and other types of
millwork in a 30,000-sq.-ft. facility in Canby, Ore. “We
usually work off of architectural drawings and then use
Microvellum software to generate our shop drawings,”
says Kelly Brodigan. “We started using Microvellum about
three years ago. We were using another software, but we
kept hearing good things about Microvellum and its
ability to generate G-code for our CNC machines. That
was important to us. We weren‘t getting that with the
other software.”
Brodigan says the learning curve was not a problem.
“We went to Microvellum’s headquarters in Medford, Ore.,
took the classroom training, came back and pretty much
were up and running,” he explains. “It definitely has
streamlined our production. Where we used to have six or
seven guys working on a bench doing the assembly work,
we now have all our boxes running through a production
line with dowel construction and a case clamp. Our
custom department orders cabinets that are needed for
reception desks, too, so we can run them through
production, and we are planning on using Microvellum’s
diewalls for reception desks in the near future.
“We have four Microvellum users now. Two, for the
most part, are generating shop drawings with it. After
we get the shop drawings back from approval by the
architects, we then go out and do the field measuring.
After that, two of us then generate the cut lists for
the machines and get everything ready to go.
“We are in the process of migrating to another
version of Microvellum that has come out, and from what
I can tell, it’s going to be even more beneficial.
Microvellum has made a lot of improvements in the
library of products that we use. It is making it more
versatile for everyone. There are a lot more options and
choices that we can make on the products than previously
– door styles, hardware styles have been added, for
instance. That will make it easier for us since we won’t
have to customize our product.
“Microvellum’s tech support is outstanding,
responsive and able to solve issues quickly. Webinars
were offered to help with the migration to Version 67,
and they were very helpful, too.” |
